Steve Berlin – The Kitchen Linen Company
Art and making things have always held a significant place in my life. Drawing, building structures with erector sets, guitar, piano, saxophone, pottery and stained glass are some of the activities that have given me a place to express my creative energy. Nothing has captured me like weaving. After decades of working in computers and technology while living Washington DC, I decided a move to California was the change I needed. Before I went West, a trip was in order back to Erie where I grew up to see my parents.
I ended up staying in Erie to help care for my father who was very ill. While caregiving for my father during the pandemic I stumbled across weaving. I was drawn to weaving by the graphic patterns and colors. Later I learned that probably this was because weaving has close ties to the development of computer technology and is a highly ordered craft. There are many ways to approach weaving. My background in computer programming, logic and mathematics have drawn me to the technical side of weaving structures, drafting (pattern design) and the magic of how color interacts so uniquely in woven fabric. I have always been drawn to creating things that have practical and utilitarian uses. My first weaving projects were kitchen towels. They are an amazing canvas for creativity and I love using them while cooking and even cleaning up in the kitchen. After spending my professional life in Washington DC creating what sometimes felt like nothing more than 1s and 0s floating in the air I love weaving and sewing physical objects that are beautiful and useful.
